Open Letter to Linden Labs
Dear Linden Labs,
I have an second life account, I'm Swedish. I know software development software, it my main daily work. I feel like we have been given the blatant hand that you no loneg care about what we the residents think about SL. The feeling that all communication now is one way. , looks total, is there any way that a resident can get feedback? Blog's like Laetizia. dandellion , Nadine, and almost all answers on all entries on your own blog. Talks about stability problems, now you choose to the new highly debated feature voice chat. I really thought Nadine was paranoid yesterday, in her attack on your defence and glorification on how good voice will be. I was probably wrong. My experiences of how voice chat chat works in English are similar to hers. I really wish i could revide the audio stream already to hear what was said. I have quite good English, both spoken and written, even if I'm dyslectic.
Non-native English speakers who have trouble communicating in text will be able to identify more quickly and integrate more fully into their respective communities through voice.
I have studied several foreign languages, I know Swedish, English, German, French some Spanish, some Japanese. In text chat i can follow all but Japanese, my hiragana, katakana, and kana isn't there at all yet. In addition i can understand typed italian, dutch, flemish, at least to get the main content most of the time. I can't in voice, no way i can. Talking swedish ok, it's easier than typing swedish, but i can only talk to one or two at a time.
When a non-native English speaker encounters a difficulty with the interface or begins interacting with the Linden Scripting Language, asking questions is often a best resource.
I agree, asking questions is the best way to get help, but what does that have to do with voice? Of cource asking questions in a language you know is good, will voice give us more Swedish speaking help staff? And for interacting with lsl please, that's is typed English, voice help will only add the problem of how do you spell it. I'm a programmer and when having questions about coding I never call colleges, or very seldom does, why, typing is better, text is better i can cut and past it, I can save it!
Listening is likewise an excellent way of integrating for non-native English speakers as many nuances of language are conveyed through tone and practice as opposed to text, which can mask cultural frameworks and in the most general sense, be far more time consuming.
Apparently the person writing this sentence have never been in a foreign country as new or intermediate speaker. The subtle tones are as hard, if not harder to get throw speak only, and the speaks tend to see them as more obvious, I have some big problems with this while working in the UK. I had issues with it in the US, and then I'm quite good at English. I would never understand it in Japanese.
Also don't tell us that this will not affect the stability. As I work in the the same trade as you I know that putting resources son something, will put them away from something else. The hours put into this development would have been much needed in stabilisation of the client, and servers. The client still crases way to often. You should should have really good statistics on this as. The client forces a log out of the session when you try to relog, and that if often sends crash dumps to you. I see people crashing around me all the time, i hear people avoiding TP's as that tend to crash afterwards. It's the client that crashes, not the servers,. this client now got loot of new code, and happily you added a bunch of fixes as well. It would have been much better to have them much earlier.
With this I'm not against a voice feature, but it's on very low priority for me. All external criticism I have heard is not against lacking voice, it's mainly that SL is ugly and buggy. Issues not prioritized to fix what I can see. And in an other note, the new communication centre is ugly, hard to understand and probably wasn't a good idea to add. The old UI was better even if not good.

Staten tjänar miljoner på second life….
Joche skriver om ett program i P4 extra, som kommer att komma och utan att ha hört detta program eller koll på vad som sker i Second Life, kan ham hålla med. Tesen är att SL bara är porr och sexuella inviter, vilket nog kan stämma på sina ställen. SL är dock så mycket mer, och så annorlunda. Hur mycket kostade detta då svenskarna? 400.000 sug på den siffran. Det är ungefär det samma som det komma att kosta att lägga upp en version på japanska och kinesiska av sweden.se, sedan kommer SI lägga 600.000 på att översätta pappers versionerna av sina publikationer till kinesiska och japanska.
Till detta kommer 1.000.000 för nya redaktörer att ta hand om kinesiska och japanska. VI st kan det vara bra att ha information om Sverige på Kinesiska och japanska. Men tanke på hur mycket denna satsning bringat in i media intresses om Sverige. Vi skulle kunna lagt miljarder på att synas mycket mycket mindre.
Skulle man lägga ned sechond house of sweden idag skulle det definitive vara en av de bästa satsningar SI gjort. Men med tanke på vad det kostar finnd det ingen anledning att göra detta. Och med tanke på hur dålig kunskapen om sverige är är det bra att det finns mycket på olika ställen. Det är ovanligt att folk vet att vi faktiskt pratat svenska, det är väll något som mupparna hittade på. Bara att sätta prickar över o. Sedan känner man till Swedish Movies, och dår är det inte Bergman direkt man syftar på, Vilgot Sjöman har gjort mycket för att sprida ett svenskt rykte. Dessutom känner många till Swedish massage. Joche vill att man skall satsa ner på t.ex. Soundic Radio, om vi tittar på radio som når till ungdomar, via sveriges radions kostar det mer än tre gånger som hela Second Life satsningen, om dagen! Givet att uppskattningarna på antalet ungdomar som lyssnar på SR är någorlunda korrekt.

OpenSim?
With the current stability I got into looking at Opensim. An open source implementation of the servers that run second life. Or rather a reimplementation using a BSD like licence. Even if this project have vary much work left to do until it's beginning to be useful. But they need help and support so maybe we can get a grid that is stable with out censor, and with the laws in the country on the sim owner not california.
For a 3d-world to take over after the web, it needs a standard interface, between client and server. It needs that everyone can start there on server really cheep. It needs that you can set up a server for your own needs on your computer. None that tried to make the own browser strategy succeeded, the need to have all stetting up there own servers and running there own home pages are much hinger that the need to control the technology. The questions what roll can Linden Labs have in such a future?
At the moment they make the best server software. They make the best client. They have the biggest knowledge of running the stuff. I'm sure a company like that can find good ways to make money But it will not be in then same way as today. There are some big questions that will have to be solved before we can get a place like that working. How will the economy work? I think is the major problem. For one of the things taht actually work in SL is the micro economy.

Terrorism, i SL?
TechCrunch pekar ut en artikel från news.com.au om att terrorister i SL. De förfäras över "On the darker side, there are also weapons armouries in SL where people can get access to guns, including automatic weapons and AK47s.". Hej skall man träna med något testa lite couter strike! Där fungerar strid ok, man slipper problem som "My side bar can't rezz.", "I need to relog. brb" De tar upp hur SLLA har gjort terrorist attacker i SL. Något som Linden beskriver som "Företaget tolkar attentaten som en satir av terrorism gjord för att väcka debatt om låtsasvärldens maktstruktur." Tyvärr kan väll även så här dumma oinsatta attacker få återspeglingar på vår frihet som avatarer.

Spännade idér om online spel
DN har idag en artikel om online spel och hur det kan användas för olika typer av forskning. Vist kan det vara en bra idé men samtidigt en risk att det blir personlig information som hamnar på avvägar att det är enkelt att samla spännande statistik gör det också farligt att samla in den. Man måste fråga sig vilka risker finns, vilken data vill vi att någon annan skall få tillgång till. Från att jag dödade 1500 Goblins för att komma upp en level. Till jag tog 500 lindens för att sitta på en pose-ball och se ut som jag hade sex.
I bland kunde man önska att även Linden labs satte medborgarnas önskemål först. De flesta vill nu ha högre stabilitet! Vist det har varit illa till och från tidigare också men om det inte blir bättre finns det idé att hålla med kritikerna.

Secondlife surls + firefox + Linux <3
Clicking on surls in firefox for linux doesn't open Second Life and teleport you to the location. For this to you have to make several manual configurations of firefox. The first step is to open the configuration into, this is done by opeing the url about:config Here toy have to add a new protocoll handler.
Right click and select new > string.
The name should be "network.protocol-handler.app.secondlife" and the value the path of your second life binary in my case "/home/balp/secondlife/secondlife"
The next step is to tell firefox to use secondlife protocoll with an extreanal application add one more key, this of the type booles, e.g. right click, new > boolean.
This one should bet the name "network.protocol-handler.external.secondlife" and the value "True"
Now only restart firefox and Surls should work.

Mer om second life
Mer second life reaktioner på nätet, "Sverige och internet" stora ord, men tyvärr mycket lite som backar upp det. Hab ser ut att basera hela sin second life erfarenhet på en artikel av Lisa Bjerre in Computer Sweden. En artikel som visserligen kan vara smått underhållande men ändå missar hur det hänger samman vilka delar som bygger upp och gör det till en fungerande verklighet. Jag bara undrar över vad som är så farligt med second life som gör alla så rädda. Kostaden för att bygga second house of sweden och hur mycket medial uppmärksamhet det rönt plockar in varenda öre mångfalt. Men vist precis som på internet förekommer sex i second life, porr har alltid varit med och drivit tekniken. Porr och sex är stort i alla former av chatrum, det finns gott om bloggar med porr. Jag är inte säker på att just second life kommer att vara den teknik som vi har on ett par år men något i den stilen, tredimensionell, interaktivt där alla kan skapa kommer att finnas och ha växt till sig.

Second life och media hypen
Blir lite förvånad idag när jag passerar second swedens blog, ytterligare en som pratar illa om second life,
och följer idag upp med ytterligare en lång sågning av second life. Nu tycker jag mig se det man alltid ser runt teknik. först kommer en skara inbitna entusiaster till tekniken, sedan kommer media. Media hypar tekniken som den skulle lösa allt. Sedan kommer det en motreaktion i media och av "elit" personer, för trots allt finns det ingen teknik som löser allt. Som säger att det är skit och aldrig kommer att bli något allt är fel. Detta sker ofta samtidigt som det växer så det knakar och mer vanligt folk kommer i kontakt med det. Second life händer det relativt ofta att jag besöker, second sweden dock mindre ofta, jag vet inte varför men träffa svenskar är liksom inte vitsen med second life. Mina vänner kommer från hela jorden, alla tidzoner, vilket ofta är ett problem.
Om vi jämför med telefoni, jag vet inte hug många gånger som GPRS och nu senare 3G skrivits ned som helt dött och ute och inte kommer att användas. Dock ser vi idag mer och mer MMS, mer och mer vanlig email i telefonerna. Något som kräver antingen GPRS eller 3G. Snart kommer nog även talet i telefonen köras mer och med över data kopplingen i telefonen, som vanlig VoIP. Det kommer dock att ta tid, de stora aktörerna måste börja fundera på sitt marknadsupplägg. Hur de skall ta betalt, hur de skall locka kunder. Det finns så många konstigheter idag som måset ändras, varför skall det kosta med att ringa Finland än Stockholm? Varför skall det kosta mer att använda telefonen i danmark? Och då framför allt varför skall det kosta med för mig som utlänning än som kund till samma företag i det landet?
Hur som tillbaka till grundämnet vad är det som gör second life bra, värt att titta på, jo att alla kan skapa, eller rättare sagt alla får skapa på ganska lika villkor. Det är på detta vis mycket mer likt internet än någon annan 3d värld jag hittat. Detta skapar massa saker som ingen kunde kommit på och skapat i andra världar. De stora nackdelarna är att Linden labs tycks drivas av en stress att få fram nya saker som kan hypa tekniken, och stabilitet kommer i andra hand. Dessutom med tanke på att tekniken ligger helt i ett ända företags händer, blir den snabbt helt beroende på hur det företaget reagerar t.ex. med censur, förbud och annat.

I should have know it comming.
My blog entry yesterday with trackbacks to Vint and Laetizia make them both very curious. So I have repost some of the entry in english. Bare with me for an new rant och how child porn is used in panic. This is basically the same as the "Vad får man säga?" entry. But i have changes some stuff that i think wasn't that relevant any more, or that i can write a little better to get my point out.
During the last week's swedish blog sites have been filled with comments about Pirate bay, and the Swedish police's child port block list. The police when out with that they where going to add Pirate Bay on the block list they distribute for most of the Swedish internet operators. That then DNS block the sites, so you can't find then in the DNS. This with them knowing there was no child port on pirate bay, that is just worked as a search engine (like google, that still holds child porn but the Swedish definition) or any of the meta search engines that index more that one tracker.
In addition to this Second Life have got child porn tacking mania after a german news tv stations payed one 27 years old and and 52 years old person to act out a sex scene where one is supposed to be a child. Linden Lab clames the the age limit in Second life is 18 years, even if no-one can believe they actually got any clue of the players age at the moment. How ever the have lead to that linden added some kind of filter to there events and classifieds. Or not a filter they just don't allow some combinations of letters, this making impossible to use the word loli in posts. This apparently as well are active when posting events on the linden lab site. Now some more more common words like teen have been added, as well. For apperently the world will be better if we can't say some words, for of course it will disappear when we can't see it any more.
Please Linden public you list, I would really like to know what I can't say. Also the swedish police should public there list of blocked domains. Secret block list will not help anyone. Personally i would like all that works with implementing there worthless lists to get home and spend some time with your your kids and family. I you all made hat it would probably make a real world difference. Out kids need grown up to look up to, to be there for them and it parents, family and friend are there that don't have to get that much out on the net in desperation to get some grown up contact. Now one probably don't dare to talk to anyone below 18 years of age, the only reason for a grown up to talk to a kid is to assault them.

I don't think LL will publish the list either, although someone (looks very kind at Laetizia, but if you do not, I will? 
could start to keep a list of all words we know are banned/blocked.
As for the banning of words being useful, I agree with what Laetizia said earlier. The stuff will still be there. And people interested will still be able to find out. There are other ways to spread this kind of information (forums, notecards, landmarks, ...). It will only make it harder to keep track of who's doing what where. And in the mean time make legally and ethically correct (whatever that may be *grins*) events impossible to post.

Thanks for this effort, Anders. I do not believe they will publish a list: Daniel Linden said that such a list would mean an endorsement of everything which is not on the list...

No I don't think that will either, if people think this is interesting the list will come out. The Secret list that the Swedish police collects about child porn sites are on several places on the net. I think the approach is stupid, figuring out the list is trivial but would make an overload attack against the SL event server.
This is just a lame excuse not to track down the real crimes. I'm getting angry for that. Abusing kids i can't stand, but I still have to defend the open world that are supposed to grow up and be a part of. I can't just stand by and let all freedoms be removed to protect them. The parents must have some responsibility here. Making sure that the kids don't play SL can't be that hard.

You are so right. Maybe we should convince some one to make a web-bot at try the English lexicon against the posting. But actually it would be more interesting to try an German, or Swedish one.

Vad får man säga?
Satt och läste runt på nätet, först skriver Oscar Swartz om hur yttrandefrihet och upphovsrätt krockar med vandra. Detta efter att han skrivit om polisens censur register mot barnporr, hur sajter godtyckligt kommer in på denna lista efter vad som måste vara misstag från Ecpat, eller ett bevis för att det mer är ute efter uppmärksamhet än att skydda barn? Allt tycks kunna gå hem i dag som krig mot barnporr. Inte nog med att svenska polisen fick fnatt och började jaga piratnedladdningssajten, piratebay som ett ställe att ladda barnporr ifrån. Detta trots att man hade klart för sig att det inte fanns eller någon sin funnits barnporr på den sajten, vist kan man hitta till barnporr från den, man det kan man på google också, eller något av de andra meta sök motorer som hittar i massa olika sökmotorer för torrents.
Dessutom har Second Life fått barnporr fnatt efter att en tysk journalist betalt för att hitta barnporr på second life, eller rättare sagt betalt en 27-åring och en 54-åring att se ut som den ena var barn och den andra vuxen. Detta har lett till at Linden labs nu tydligen har ett riktigt bra filer som skall skydda oss alla mot barn porr, vi får inte skriva loli i "events" och annonser, inte "teen" heller tydligen, låter som en super-bra idé att man inte skall få skriva dessa farliga ord. För vist kommer det att försvinna om inte man kan hitta sakerna. Specialtl när man börjar gå in och skydda sig med vaga listor över förbjudna ord.

Jag skulle tycka det vore trevligt om en lista på vad som liden labs censureras kunds visas upp. Lika så borde polisen offentliggöra sin lista över spärrade sajter. Hemliga skydds listor hjälper ingen. Dessutom skulle jag personligen se att all denna energi som nu läggs ned på dessa verkningslösa list lades till att gå hem och umgås med sina egna barn och släktingar. Så kanske barnen inte behöver söka sig ut lika mycket på nätet och andra skumma anonyma ställer för att få lite vuxen kontakt. Nu vägar man väll i sig inte prata med något under 18 år. Efter som det i så fall måste vara att jag är ute för att göra ett övergrepp.
